We are testing Apple’s LiDAR

We already knew ARKit, Apple's mobile augmented reality platform. The arrival of LiDAR on recent iPhones and iPads changes the picture, and we wanted to measure what it actually makes possible.

LiDAR scans the environment over roughly five metres, very easily, and with enough precision for a good number of practical or playful uses. Two of them seemed worth testing.

Scanning a person in volume

The first is a volumetric scan of a person, for advanced video conferencing — with augmented reality glasses, for instance — or for lighter interactions such as duplicating the person you are talking to into the room.

AR Rescue Squad, a playable demo

The second takes us towards games. AR Rescue Squad came out of it: a technology demonstration of LiDAR in which you fly a helicopter and rescue people lost in your living room — or hide the aircraft somewhere in the scenery.

This kind of trial is how we stay current: knowing a piece of hardware before recommending it, rather than discovering it at the same time as our clients. The same approach led us to join Google's Android XR programme in 2026.

Working on something with this kind of hardware? Let's talk.
